Wanna know why the Doctrine of the Trinity was invented?
It was invented as an attempt to do something the Ramban said was impossible for human minds to do:
Discern and then define the nature of God.
Humans may be able to describe how God acts in this world.
But we will never be able to discern WHAT God is…His essential nature.
Despite this, the Greek-thinking Gentile Church has spent centuries trying to do exactly that, beginning with the Trinity.
There is no word Trinity in the New Testament, and there is no passage giving that definition.
They’re ripping Scripture out of context and pretending to know what God is, when they’re about as theologically ignorant as the cockroach I killed in my kitchen the other day.
They ain’t satisfied with simply observing how God has acted in history or how He acts today.
They are so driven to do the very thing all humans are incapable of doing.
You can’t analyze and break down God’s nature into some ridiculous algorithmic formula.
Why?
Because our essential nature as humans makes that impossible.
Are you getting this?
You trying to understand God’s nature is like asking an ant trying to comprehend a calculus textbook and then demanding that it publish an essay about it or something.
This reminds me of what the Lord told Job in the midst of his suffering:
“Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.
Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
Who marked off its dimensions?
Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?”
He continues to challenge Job by saying:
“Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea
or walked in the recesses of the deep?
Have the gates of death been shown to you?
Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?
Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?
Tell me, if you know all this.”
Seriously, read the Book of Job starting from Chapter 38.
If you possess even an ounce of theological arrogance, it will be obliterated.
It will also make you see how utterly ridiculous all of these debates about the nature of God really are.
This leads to our takeaway for today.
Stop assuming you can always know WHY God does what He does.
That’s Greek thinking, homie.
Instead, ask WHAT or WHICH.
In other words, WHAT or WHICH pattern of God is on display when reading Scripture?
Ya feel me here?
When Scripture doesn’t reveal WHY God did something, don’t just pull some random answer out of your rear end.
Pay attention to WHAT He revealed and WHICH pattern He established.
I’ve spoken about this before after learning it from Tom Bradford’s Torah class.
Bradford says asking “why” is good for scientific reasoning and discovering how our physical universe operates.
But it’s absolutely useless for trying to discern the character of God.
The Scriptures ain’t a scientific textbook, man.
When you ask “why,” inherent in that question is the assumption that you can actually comprehend the Lord’s mind behind His sovereign decisions.
That dog ain’t gonna hunt, homie.
Asking “why” also produces an arrogant attitude of entitlement.
Like we have the right to question our sovereign Creator’s reasoning behind His decisions and actions.
Scripture does not encourage us to ask God why.
It simply exhorts us to OBEY His commandments…
And to do so in FAITH.
I’ll leave it at that for today.

“But who are you,
a human being,
to talk back to God?
“Shall what is formed say
to the one who formed it,
‘Why did you make me like this?’”
– Romans 9:20“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom
and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!
Who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?”
– Romans 11:33-34“For who knows a person’s thoughts
except their own spirit within them?
In the same way no one knows the
thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”
