“To Evyatar the cohen the king said, ‘You, get yourself to ‘Anatot, to your own fields. You deserve to die; but I won’t put you to death just now; since you did carry the ark of Adonai Elohim before David my father; and you suffered together with my father in everything he suffered.’”-1 Kings 2:26
Following on the heels of yesterday’s discussion, Evyatar was the last of Eli’s line.
Tzadok had taken over as High Priest.
This effectively ended Eli’s illegitimate line of High Priests.
Prophecy fulfilled!
Interesting that Solomon told Evyatar that he deserved to die, but that he wouldn’t put him to death because he served…
…”before David my father; and you suffered together with my father in everything he suffered.
So Solomon chose to honor the memory of his father.
When King Saul persecuted David, Evyatar (now 80 years old) stood by him through it all.
And now that faith was being rewarded.
Solomon decided that the faithfulness Evyatar showed David overrode any thought that he should be executed…
Despite Evyatar’s disloyalty toward Solomon…
And even though he deserved death.
I find an interesting takeaway here that parallels our salvation.
Like Evyatar, we are all rebels.
Why?
We have all rebelled against the Father because of our sin.
And we all deserve death as Evyatar did.
But because of our faith in the Davidic Messiah…
We are all spared from eternal destruction.
Just as Evyatar was spared being put to death.
Ya feel me?
That’s what I got for you today.
See ya all next time.
