“While he was still speaking, there came Yonatan the son of Evyatar the cohen. Adoniyah said, ‘Come in! You’re a worthy man, so you must be bringing good news!’ Yonatan answered Adoniyah, ‘The truth is, our lord King David has made Shlomo king.‘“-1 Kings 1:42-43
Alrighty, let’s not forget that while Solomon was being crowned King, Adoniyah and his cronies were still partying like there was no tomorrow, just a couple of hundred yards down the hill.
When all of the shouting and noise from Solomon’s coronation reached Adoniyah and his guests, only one man noticed and suspected something was amiss.
That man was Joab.
As David’s top general, this homie was always on high alert.
He heard the shofar blast and said…
“That noise — what’s the meaning of this uproar in the city?”
At that instant, Jonathan, the son of the other High Priest (the false one), came running in with some news to share.
Adoniyah, drunker than an Irish pirate, looked up at the young lad and said…
“Come in! You’re a worthy man, so you must be bringing good news!”
Well, Jonathan had some news, alright.
But it was anything but good.
In verse 43, Jonathan then dropped the nuclear bomb.
“Our lord King David has made Shlomo king.”
And then to make it crystal clear that what he was saying was legitimate, he went on to say…
“Moreover, the king sent with him Tzadok the cohen, Natan the prophet, B’nayah the son of Y’hoyada and the K’reti and P’leti; they had him ride on the king’s mule; and Tzadok the cohen and Natan the prophet anointed him king in Gichon.”
Jonathan’s announcement effectively ended the party at that point.
Adoniyah’s hopes were dashed.
But worse than that, he knew he was now on the wrong side of power.
Actually, lemme rephrase that.
Everybody at Adoniyah’s party knew they were now on the wrong side of power.
Within the space of 7 seconds, the atmosphere of drunken euphoria had turned into sober terror.
The question now hanging over everyone’s heads was who would die and who would be spared.
Alrighty, let’s switch over to the takeaway.
I dunno if you realized it, but we’ve just been given a snapshot of what things are gonna be like in the end times.
When Messiah returns, there’s gonna be two groups of people.
Those who will rejoice because they chose to pledge allegiance to the Messiah before he returned.
And those whose earthly joy will instantly turn to horror as they realize they are on the wrong side of power.
Every human being on the planet will either be on one side of the fence or the other.
The only question that remains is, which side of the fence will you be on?
Ya feel me here?
Done.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“’Not everyone who says to Me,
‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven,
but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
Many will say to Me in that day,
‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name,
cast out demons in Your name,
and done many wonders in Your name?’
And then I will declare to them,
‘I never knew you;
depart from Me,
you who practice lawlessness!’”
-Matthew 7:21-23
