“Then the angel of Adonai came and sat under the pistachio tree in ‘Ofrah that belonged to Yo’ash the Avi‘ezri. His son Gid‘on was threshing wheat in the winepress, in order to hide it from Midyan.”-Judges 6:11
God’s cycle of deliverance begins with the appearance of the MALACH YAHWEH or the Angel of the Lord.
We’re told this awesome manifestation of God appeared to Gideon near some type of tree.
The location is OFRAH.
For those who have visited the West Bank territories in Israel, keep in mind this is NOT the same OFRAH located there.
That OFRAH was located in Benjamin’s former territory.
We’re specifically told this OFRAH belonged to Yo’ash the Avi-ezri.
Let me break that phrase down for you so you understand it properly, okay?
The OFRAH we’re talking about here in Judges Chapter 6 was located in territory owned by the tribe of Manessah.
Of course, I’m talking about the 1/2 of western Manessah living INSIDE the Promised Land, not the other half of Manasseh who staked their claim on the eastern side of the Jordan River OUTSIDE of the Promised Land with Reuben and Gad.
Now when it says Yo’ash the Avi-ezri, this means Yo’ash was the name of a dude who was a member of the clan of Avi’ezer.
And this dude named Yo’ash owned a village called OFRAH (yes, he owned a whole freakin’ village) and this village was part of the tribe of Manessah.
Got it?
Remember it wasn’t uncommon for the same name to be used for a number of places in the Promised Land…just like there’s an Oakland in California and an Oakland in New York (in Livingston County) for instance.
Onward.
So again, we have this appearance of the Angel of the Lord and we have to deal with it.
The first thing I should say is don’t confuse this Angel of the Lord with the unnamed prophet the Lord sent to the people in verse 7.
These are two DIFFERENT beings.
We know this because the unnamed prophet in verse 7 refers to the Lord in the third person by saying ““Adonai the God of Israel says, ‘I brought you up from Egypt, out of a life of slavery”.
However, the Angel of the Lord who appears in verse 11 speaks in the first person as God Himself.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, these appearances of the Angel of the Lord flat out point out the fallacy of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity which states God can only manifest Himself as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
You can’t limit God into a box like that man by saying that every possible physical manifestation of God had to be some kind of “pre-incarnate Yeshua” which I don’t buy for a second.
Yeshua was born of a woman at a certain specific time in history.
That was his first coming.
If he appeared multiple times before that, then his birth in Bethlehem definitely was NOT his first coming.
It would have been more like his fiftieth coming or something.
Seriously, are you going to say the Burning Bush manifestation was really Yeshua?
Gimme a break man.
Alright it’s getting late.
I’m stopping here.
Abraham says
Could you please explain ‘the Lord in the third person’ Thanks

Hi Abraham, I’m not sure what you mean. “Here O’Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is ONE” That’s the only theological concept I’m aware of and accept. Shalom.
