JU5-8: How The Gospel Message Is Embedded In The Song Of Devorah

“Hear, kings; listen, princes;
I will sing to Adonai!
I will sing praise to Adonai
the God of Israel.“
-Judges 5:3

From verse 3, Devorah’s focus switches over to the gentiles.

How do we know that?

Because she says “Hear, kings; listen, princes”.

Remember Israel had no royalty ruling over them at this time.

Hence, she had to be speaking to the gentiles.

And the implication of her message is clear.

She’s letting her audience know in no uncertain terms that while the kings and princes of the gentile world may bow down to their false gods and deities, she herself is settled in her decision that she will worship ONLY the God of Israel.

Here’s the thing.

After they got utterly crushed by Israel, the Canaanites were probably wondering which one of their Mystery Babylon gods betrayed them and decided to side with Israel.

Devorah is letting them know, and this is a paraphrase, that…

“Listen homies you guys being utterly crushed by us has nothing to do with your gods betraying you”.

“It has everything to do with our God of Israel”.

And there’s another important message contained in this statement.

It’s not outright stated but it’s there nevertheless.

Devorah is also indirectly saying…

“You ought to learn from us and do the same”.

In other words, Devorah is implying that all the gentile kings and princes of the world should throw away their meaningless god idols and false deities and switch their allegiance over to the one true God in the universe.

And here’s also the thing.

She’s saying that to us as well.

Whatever false god you’re clinging to for salvation in your life whether it be money, your job, sex, the noitaniccav or whatever, let’s learn from Devorah and the God who gave Barak and his men victory.

That’s right.

There’s an inherent gospel message in her message.

For the Lord Himself declares to every nation in every corner of the world:

Turn to ME and you shall be saved.
