The last time we met we discussed how God’s Spirit comes upon a man versus covering a man.
I even introduced 2 different Hebrew words to describe these 2 different phenomena:
HAYYAH (הָיָה) and LABESH (לָבַשׁ).
But what about the New Testament phenomenon of the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of a man?
What I can say is this:
After the festival of Shavuot (Pentecost) that took place after the death and resurrection of Yeshua, when a believer comes to faith, his or her soul is cleansed and made pure to the extent that it qualifies that person to reside eternally in the presence of a Holy God without having to worry about being destroyed.
Boy, that was a mouthful, wasn’t it?
But that’s the best way I can think of to describe it.
As far as I can tell, this type of operation of the Holy Spirit did not exist before the coming of Messiah.
During the OT era, upon death a believer’s soul was transported to a place known as Abraham’s bosom.
This was a temporary spiritual home until Yeshua freed those captives via his atoning work on the cross.
Onward.
Let’s get back to Judges.
So we’re told the Spirit of God came UPON Othniel and that he went into battle against Kushan-Rish’atayim of Edom.
Othniel succeeded in expelling the ruler of Edom out of the areas of Judah and the southern most parts of Ephraim.
As a result, we’re told the territories he conquered received rest from their enemies for 40 years.
A period that ended when Othniel died.
This is a key pattern telling us how a judge operated.
A judge is raised up and then throughout his entire life up until his death, God gives him the power to overpower his gentile enemies.
