“Thus they erected for themselves Mikhah’s idol which he had made, and it remained there as long as the house of God was in Shiloh.”-Judges 18:31
Chapter 18 concludes with the statement that Micah’s silver idol was set and worshipped by the Tribe of Dan “as long as the house of God was in Shiloh”.
The phrase “house of God” refers to the Wilderness Tabernacle.
During this time, it was being held at a place called Shiloh.
Shiloh was also the place where the Priesthood was located (the real and official priesthood, not some false one).
Later on, the Tabernacle would be moved to Beit-el.
Actually, we’ll see that even more than the sacred tent itself, the Ark of the Covenant was shuffled around from one place to another quite often.
The point being is that after Joshua passed, every element of Hebrew society fell to pieces.
This is the repeated theme underlying the entire book of Judges.
Without a king to rule with an iron rod, every man will end up doing what is right in his own eyes.
If you’ve ever been a boss and had to be responsible for managing people, I’m sure you’ve had first-hand experience with this.
As soon as employees are left to their own devices, they naturally gravitate towards laziness and shirking on their duties.
Bottomline, mankind needs a king to rule over it.
