“After this, he fell in love with a woman who lived in the Sorek Valley, whose name was D’lilah.”-Judges 16:4
It’s interesting that without exception every recorded event about Samson has to do with this love/hate relationship with the gentile world.
He loved gentile women (Philistines) but he hated the gentiles (Philistines) as a whole.
It kind of reminds me of how some white men love to travel to Asia (like Thailand) just to bang Asian whores but could care less about the culture or general population.
Their whole attitude is one of superiority and condescension towards the local population.
Well, Samson was kind of the same way.
The only interest he had in the Philistines was their women.
They must have been quite stunning since it seemed like he couldn’t stay away from them.
After Samson threw those gates off of a hillside on the road to Hebron, he returned home.
But then verse 4 tells us after a little while he was right back in Philistine territory to have some fun with Philistine women.
This behavior of Samson perfectly reflects our interactions with the world.
There’s a part of us that wants to be separated from the world and all its sin and degradation.
Yet at the same time, there’s a part of us that can’t resist its temptations.
As believers, we want to be a light unto the world as Yeshua commanded.
Yet at the same time, we’re afraid.
Afraid to be seen as different…
Afraid to be judged as a religious freak, intolerant or offensive.
Samson just couldn’t stay away from Philistine whores.
That was his weakness.
And it proved to be his downfall.
So let me ask you this?
What’s your weakness?
Personally, I can relate to Samson’s lust for women and sex.
And I also have a similar lust for money.
These are two worldly things that constantly trip me up and stop me from being all that God wants me to be in this life.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Then you will be able to test and approve
what God’s will is—
his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
-Romans 12:2
“For the love of money is
a root of all kinds of evil.
Some people, eager for money,
have wandered from the faith
and pierced themselves
with many griefs.”
-1 Timothy 6:10
“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified:
that you should avoid sexual immorality;
that each of you should learn to control
your own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
not in passionate lust like the pagans,
who do not know God.”
-1 Thessalonians 4:3-5
