“D’lilah said to Shimshon, ‘You’re making fun of me, telling me lies. Now, come on, tell me what it takes to tie you up.’ ‘All it takes,’ he answered, ‘is to tie me up with new ropes that haven’t been used. Then I’ll become weak and be like anyone else.'”-Judges 16:10-11
Delilah with dollar signs in her eyes continues to pester Samson to tell her the secret behind his great strength.
Samson remembers the time many years earlier at Eitam Rock when 3000 of his own Hebrew brothers tied him with rope and handed him over to the Philistines.
Recalling that incident Samson tells her...”tie me up with new ropes that haven’t been used. Then I’ll become weak and be like anyone else.”
Again, Samson was like a child playing with fire.
He thought he was the one toying with Delilah when he was the one being toyed with.
So Delilah ties him up with fresh rope and once again shouts out…
“Samson, the Philistines are upon you”.
As before, Samson flexed his muscles and instantly broke free.
However, Delilah was not to be deterred.
She brought out what I like to call the dreaded “guilt machine gun”.
She starts blasting Samson with emotionally charged bullets…
“Why are you lying to me?”
“Why are you hurting my feelings?”
“Why are you making me feel like a fool?”
This is another one of those emotional tactics women often use on men that is utterly deadly.
And it worked like a charm for Delilah…
Because the next thing Samson said was…
“If you weave the seven locks of my hair across thread on a loom.”
Uh oh.
Now Samson is getting dangerously closer to revealing the real truth behind his strength.
Using a chess metaphor, Delilah was just a few moves away from achieving a checkmate.
The lesson today is similar to yesterday’s.
It is never wise to play any of Satan’s games.
You think you’re in control when it’s really the devil who’s pulling your strings.
I’m reminded of the world of the occult…
How it can suck you in and never let go.
I’m talking about psychics and fortune tellers who use crystal balls to reveal things that truly only God knows.
Tarot cards and Ouija boards are also good examples of satanic games whose origins are rooted in pure evil.
For instance, the Ouija board stems from spiritualism and the belief that the dead can communicate with the living…
A practice that is strictly forbidden by Scripture.
Just as Samson should have walked away from Delilah once she started her pestering, we too should IMMEDIATELY walk away from the devil’s games and schemes and NEVER return back.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“Be alert and of sober mind.
Your enemy the devil prowls
around like a roaring lion
looking for someone to devour.”
