What I find amazing is just how quickly Israel fell into idolatry.
When we read about events that happened in ancient times, I think we tend to think things occurred over super long stretches of time.
But that’s not always the case.
Sure, the consequences of some of our ungodly behavior may take time to manifest.
But there are certain high-handed sins that will produce devastating consequences almost immediately.
Israel’s idolatrous actions at the end of Joshua’s time was just that type of behavior.
And boy did God’s wrath flare up fast and furious.
For instance, in my country (the United States), a good portion of the population believes that God’s Word no longer has any place in our society and should not serve as a guide to how we should live our lives.
That’s why I’m expecting the shoe to drop anytime in my country (if it hasn’t dropped already).
And as I’ve been saying, that’s why there’s a direct parallel between the time of Judges and our era.
The similarities are downright spooky if you think about it.
During the time of Judges, the children of Israel were surrounded by a population of “unbelievers”.
And they decided to respond by appeasing them because they didn’t want to ruffle any feathers.
This meant giving up some of the land to the Canaanites and letting them live in territory reserved only for Israel.
Doesn’t this type of behavior sound familiar as all heck?
And it doesn’t end there.
In order to soothe their guilty conscience for disobeying God’s clear instructions, the Hebrews did what we all do.
They rationalized.
They concocted their own man-made theology that said “Love is above all”.
This misguided notion led to compromise and ignoring the unbreakable principles God has woven into the Universe.
If there’s anything I want you to get from today’s post, it is this.
Although it may seem like the peaceful and practical thing to do, when you compromise, the devil wins.
Period.
