You know what’s really inspiring about the Book of Judges?
It demonstrates that God can use even the worst of us, warts and all, to bring about His divine purposes.
What do I mean by that exactly?
Well, with the advent of the dark era of the Judges, the godly leadership of Joshua and his successors pretty much ended.
And once they were gone, Torah-based leadership in Israel was replaced by selfish leaders who were more interested in serving themselves and their agenda rather than the people’s.
Sounds just like our modern politicians and corporate bigwigs, doesn’t it?
Pretty much every Shophet or Judge who Hashem called possessed serious character flaws.
And the Bible makes no attempt whatsoever to hide their moral failings.
There’s no comparison that can be made to the divine leadership demonstrated by Moses, Joshua and Phinehas and the flawed characters we’ll be introduced to in the book of Judges.
Samson is a perfect example.
Here we have a grown man born under a Nazarite vow who acted more like an immature and horny teenager who couldn’t keep his hormones in check.
His interest in the spiritual things of the Lord was zero.
He ended up marrying a non-Hebrew which broke his parents’ hearts.
And he loved to party, drink booze and sleep with prostitutes.
Yet, in spite of his character failures, Samson was a chosen instrument of God to defeat the Philistines.
We’ll continue this discussion the next time we meet.
