Remember that the chapter breaks and the numbering of verses in the Bible is a man-made invention.
These divisions were done in a somewhat random fashion long after the Biblical canon was established.
The intention of the scholars who did this was a good one.
The chapter divisions and verse numbers were done so that any section of the Bible could be easily referenced for easy study and discussion with others.
I would say this was a good thing and for the most part the divisions seem to follow a logical pattern that best reflects the beginnings and endings of the content of Scripture.
But not always and the break between Joshua chapters 5 and 6 is a perfect case in point.
If the truth be told, Joshua chapters 5 and 6 should NOT have been broken up the way it has been.
Why?
Because it’s actually one long story.
On top of that, the break between the chapters gives the impression that the divine warrior figure who appeared before Joshua at the end of Joshua chapter 5 ended his conversation.
And then from Chapter 6, it seems like a brand new conversation suddenly took place between God and Joshua.
This is wrong.
The Leader of Hashem’s Hosts who started speaking to Joshua in chapter 5 is the same figure who continues to speak to Joshua from the beginning of Chapter 6.
