“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15
Ever found yourself in a situation you wanted to escape?
But the harder you tried to escape from it, the worse things got?
Ignoring your credit card or student loan debt is one such situation.
When you entered into a contract with the credit card company or lending institution, you gained access to money.
But you also handcuffed yourself to certain legal conditions.
And if for whatever reason, you decided to NOT meet those conditions, there would be consequences to pay.
You could expect calls and letters from debt collectors.
You could have what you owed taken out of your salary or tax refund.
You could even have your home or car repossessed.
And if you tried to run away by flying off to another country, it didn’t really solve anything.
Because that debt would always be hanging over your head like a dark cloud of doom ready to break out into a hellish storm if you ever decided to set foot back in your home country.
What’s the point of this?
My point is simple.
Choosing to serve the Creator of the universe is quite similar.
When you choose to serve God (and it is a free choice you made), you entered into a legal contract with the Ruler of the universe.
And getting out of such a relationship could be very difficult.
In Israel’s case, it resulted in their destruction and exile when they tried to walk away from God.
That’s why Joshua told Israel they just didn’t get it.
Their response to Joshua was no different than a child agreeing to something he didn’t fully comprehend.
Understand this.
To choose to serve God comes with its blessings but if you choose to walk away, the curses can be dire indeed.
