You know, we really shouldn’t be too surprised that God had to destroy Achan for trespassing on His Holiness.
Why?
Because there are actually several other earlier incidents in Scripture when the Lord was forced to destroy others for tampering with His Holiness.
Consider this hypothetical situation before I share some specific examples.
Imagine if some fool was to improperly remove an Incense Burner from the Tabernacle and then take it back to his tent where it accidentally came into contact with a common pan or pot used for daily cooking.
Based on what we know about how God’s spiritual laws operate, what would happen?
We know that the common pan or pot would become holy.
And then whatever was cooked in that pan or pot would also become holy.
And then whoever ate that food would also become holy.
Again, I’m speaking theoretically here because as I mentioned in yesterday’s post, the Lord would NEVER allow such a thing to happen.
How Hashem would handle this particular situation is to immediately destroy the cooking pot or pan and more likely than not, the idiot who who decided to take the holy Incense Burner from the Tabernacle would also be destroyed.
Again, the Lord does NOT allow unauthorized transmission of His Holiness, period.
There are no exceptions to this rule.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, if He has to, the Lord would destroy the whole universe to protect His Holiness.
It is that important to Him.
What are some popular examples of God destroying things or people to prevent unauthorized transmission of His Holiness?
How about the two sons of Israel’s first High Priest Aaron named Nadab and Abihu?
Recall they took the holy incense burners burners and put what the Scriptures call “strange fire” into them.
Actually, to be more specific, what they did was take coals from a COMMON wood fire instead of taking them from the Brazen Altar and placed them inside HOLY objects that were ordained only for service at the Tabernacle.
In other words, they committed the fatal error of mixing the COMMON with the HOLY.
What was the result?
God instantly burned up BOTH the holy instruments and Aaron’s sons.
Why?
Because as I’ve been hammering home a couple of times now, God did this to protect His holiness from being infected by the common.
Notice what God said after He roasted Nadab and Abihu to a crisp.
“Among those who approach me I will show myself holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored.'”-Leviticus 10:3
A few verses down, the Lord warns…
…”You must distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean”-Leviticus 10:10
Another good example is Korah and the rebels who sided with him against Moses.
They didn’t like the idea that only Aaron’s clan was allowed to present holy incense to the Lord.
So what did these fools try to do?
They brought their own personal fire pans from their tents (common items!), filled them up with their own coals and incense (more common items!) and then attempted to present them to the Lord inside of the holy Tabernacle grounds.
This was an instant suicide mission.
They got so physically near the Lord that His Holiness would be transmitted to their fire pans making them holy without God’s permission.
Therefore, God had no choice but to burn up all of the fire pans and the around 200 rebels who brought them.
Again, this was done to present unauthorized transmission of His holiness.
Is this clear now?
And is it starting to make sense from a true Scriptural perspective why God had to destroy Achan?
Achan had touched what was under HEREM or the ban at Jericho.
Anything banned in a holy war is by definition holy property.
What happened with Achan was that he was infected with a degree of holiness not permitted to him.
Therefore, God had no choice but to destroy him.
Anyone or anything who contracts God’s holiness without authorization is destroyed, period.
This is a non-negotiable law as sure as the law of gravity.
