As I mentioned earlier, we are NOT going to study the tedious looooooooooooong list of cities and villages listed in Joshua 15 and the chapters that follow immediately after.
It’s not necessary as long as you understand the basis behind why cities and villages grouped together at certain locations.
So what are some of these reasons?
The first reason is that it was dangerous for any one city or village to be situated too far away or isolated from the others.
It exposed them to attack from invading enemies and made it difficult to barter and trade for essential goods.
Therefore, the various clans and tribes decided to cluster together for mutual trade and protection.
Second, geography played a huge role in determining where villages and cities decided to settle down.
In fact, geography is a big deal even now in recent modern times.
I’m willing to bet the town where you live right now was built where it is because of natural waterways flowing through the area.
Or if your neighborhood is located on a higher, elevated area, that’s because the high ground was suitable for growing crops and raising livestock.
Finally, the third reason is that transportation in the Bible era was obviously much more difficult than it is today.
Once couldn’t just hop in a car or jump on a plane to go somewhere.
That’s why villages forming small clusters of civilization near water sources came together again for the purposes of commerce and common defense.
Then as it is now, human beings have always gathered together for survival purposes.
