“After Y’hoshua and the people of Israel had finished killing them off in a very great slaughter, till they had been destroyed, and the remaining remnant had entered the fortified cities, all the people returned safely to Y’hoshua at the camp in Makkedah; and no one said a word against any of the people of Israel.”-Joshua 10:20-21
In verse 21, we’re told the the Israelites returned back to their camps at Makkedah to get some rest after chasing down the remaining forces of the 5 conquered kings.
Okay, so right here, some scholars take issue with this verse and call it a contradiction because just 6 verses earlier we’re told the soldiers travelled back to Gilgal to recuperate.
Honestly, I think those scholars are just blowing things way out of proportion.
Because it was totally normal back in the those days and even now to set up temporary camps for R&R purposes when troops had to travel long distances to fight their battles.
Gilgal was simply the main camp or home base.
And Makkedah was used as a temporary lodging.
So there you go, problem solved!
The majority of Joshua’s men probably stayed back at headquarters in Gilgal while a carefully selected much smaller group of soldiers were sent out to chase down the enemy survivors.
It was for this group that a temporary and remote base was set up at Makkedah.
Onward.
Let’s take a look at verse 21.
We’re told that…
…”no one said a word against any of the people of Israel”.
However, if we translate from the Hebrew literally, we actually get the following…
“….but against any of the children of Israel
shall not a dog whet his tongue“.
What the heck is this all about?
It turns out this is just a common Hebrew expression.
It means that when the Israelite army returned back to their camps and even when they entered Makkedah (where the 5 kings were being held hostage) no one treated them with disrespect or gave them any trouble.
The takeaway here is simple.
When you’re obedient to God and in His Will, He will keep you safe from hostility even when you travel in enemy territory.
