The next Biblical character we encounter in our Torah overview is one of gargantuan proportions.
I’m talking about none other than Moses.
Moses came into this world around 1400 BC and he was born from the Levite family of Amram and Jochobed.
Since Moses was born during a time when Pharaoh had ordered the extermination of all Hebrew babies, in desperation his parents hid Moses by placing him in a waterproof basket and floating it down the Nile River.
It would have taken great faith to do what Moses’ parents did.
Moses could have been eaten up by a hungry crocodile or discovered by one of the Egyptian soldiers.
Fortunately and as is always the case, God was watching and controlling all events from the heavens.
Moses ends up being rescued by an Egyptian Princess whose heart melted when she opened the reed basket and saw a cute toddler staring back at her.
The Princess immediately decided to adopt the baby right there on the spot and gave him the name Moses.
What does “Moses” mean?
It means “born of”.
Understand that Moses is NOT a Hebrew name.
Rather it was a common Egyptian name.
In Hebrew, Moses name is actually MOSHEH and it means “to draw out”…
…because Moses was drawn out of the Nile River.
We’ll continue our study focusing on Moses the next time we meet.
