The next task for Abraham who was now quite old was to find his son Isaac a wife.
This was quite a dilemma for Abraham.
Where in the world was he going to find a suitable woman?
The truth is he despised the local Canaanite women.
So having Isaac marry one of the locals was out of the question.
After giving it much thought, Abraham decides to commission his servant to journey northwards to his hometown in Mesopotamia and there find Isaac an acceptable wedding partner.
We’re told the servant traveled to the city of Nahor where he encountered Rebecca (Rivkah in Hebrew).
Who exactly was Rebecca?
She was the daughter of Abraham’s brother who also happened to be named Nahor.
However, understand there is no connection between the city of Nahor the servant went to and the name of Abraham’s brother.
Nahor just happened to be a distant relative who went by the same name.
If you recall, Nahor was the brother who decided to stay behind and NOT travel with Abraham to the land of Canaan.
Fast forward, after receiving permission from her parents, Abraham’s servant escorts Rebecca back to Canaan and she marries Isaac.
Shortly afterwards, the great Abraham breathes his last breath and passes away at the ripe old age of 175 years.
Afterwards, the body of Abraham is taken to Hebron and buried next his beloved wife Sarah.
We need to take a moment to consider just how great a man Abraham was.
This was a man who literally gave birth to the three great monotheistic faiths in existence today: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Every year (well not this year because of the damn corona virus) Jews, Christians and Muslims from all around the world flock to the Holy Land to pay homage to this man who although having many flaws and weaknesses, at the end of the day decided to love and trust Hashem.
It was this decision that made all the difference…
…and as a result we have all been greatly blessed because of his faith.
This should be an inspiration to us all.
We don’t have to be perfect (though we should strive to be).
If we will only wholeheartedly surrender ourselves to the Lord, He will make our crooked paths straight and our evil ways holy.
