Compared to the Fertile Crescent from where Abraham hailed, life was rough in the land of Canaan.
Why?
Because being able to survive was directly connected to the soil.
This means everything depended on the rainfall which sometimes came and sometimes didn’t.
Minus the rain, there could be no crops or land that could be pastured and thus no survival.
This fickle environment is probably why the Canaanites had countless numbers of gods named after every natural phenomenon you could think of.
There was the rain god, the wind god and…
…deities who controlled the clouds, a deity for barley and so on and on.
However, in the land of Canaan, the main head honcho god was Baal.
At least Baal was considered to be the most trendy god among the pantheon of deities that existed.
Now, despite the difficulty of life in Canaan, Abraham and his nephew Lot flourished and became wealthier and wealthier.
We’re told in Genesis chapter 13 that they prospered so greatly that they had to part ways because their respective flocks and herds were growing at such an exponential rate it was beginning to outpace the amount of land available to all parties involved.
Things even got to the point where disputes broke out between the other local herdsmen.
It was during this time that Lot, who was attracted to the hustle and bustle of city life, picked up and moved to Sodom, a major metropolis located next to the southwestern bank of the Dead Sea.
One of the biggest takeaways I’m getting from today’s post is that in spite of adverse conditions, it mattered not to God’s chosen people.
God ensured they prospered greatly regardless of difficult circumstances.
This should serve as a reassurance and an inspiration during this crazy Covid 19 pandemic situation.
Everything is under God’s control and He shall keep you.
See you all next time.
