It should come as no surprise to us that Abraham began life as a pagan.
There are two strong reasons to support this assertion.
FIRST, the whole world was steeped in paganism and idol worship during this era in history.
SECOND, Abraham’s father Terah was a merchant who traded the standard idols used in all of the Mystery Babylon religions.
Hence, it’s hardly a stretch to imagine that Abraham himself also owned and worshipped a number of idols.
However, there’s also the possibility he still believed in the one true God that Noah spoke of.
But given the current cultural climate at the time, that’s highly unlikely.
If Abraham had been a person who spoke out against idols he would have had some serious run-ins with his father…
…because the family’s very livelihood was based on the trading of idols.
Another possibility we shouldn’t overlook is that it’s highly possible that Abraham worshipped the one true God along with a number of other deities.
Folks during this time had no problem worshipping many gods at the same time and if another god came along that they thought was cool, it was added to the mix.
Another common feature of the idol worship of the times was that people placed their gods into a hierarchical ranking of sorts.
They would choose one god to be the dominant one and then they placed all the other gods below that one main god.
When the Israelites used such expressions such as “God above all Gods” or “Lord above all Lords”, they meant it literally.
Interestingly, the belief in the non-existence of gods or atheism did not exist at this time.
In the history of religious or philosophical thought, atheism was a relatively new and modern concept.
Because every record we have of every ancient society ever discovered tells us that throughout history people have always worshipped superior beings.

I know all of Abraham’s family and everyone around were idolators, but I have always thought of
Abraham as a person intelligent enough to look around him at the creation, and to realize that
these idols could not possibly have created it. I see him as one who goes out alone and seeks
to know who the Creator is.

I always wondered if Abraham had a heart understanding of a one true living God. I was not aware of the timeline from Noah to Abraham. Thank you for your teaching. My husband and I both receive your daily email.
