“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.”-Deuteronomy 29:29
We’ve been expounding on the final verse of Deuteronomy chapter 29.
There’s one more important point connected to this verse I want to get off my chest before we move on to the next chapter.
I’m talking about the Messianic and prophetic fervor that existed in the decades leading up to the birth of Yeshua.
The truth is that during this time, the Jewish sages and religious authorities were awaiting with great anticipation the coming of their Jewish Messiah per the Scriptural prophecies.
The fact they had been oppressed by Rome for so long only intensified their hopes that they were living in the last days when their Deliver would finally come to rescue Israel.
And just like it is today, all manner of theories about who the Messiah would be, how he would appear, and under what circumstances were concocted and turned into a host of uncompromising doctrines.
When I say “uncompromising”, I mean just that.
There was little room for disagreement.
In fact, the various religious authorities were so convinced that HASHEM had revealed to them the secret details on how the Jewish Messiah would be publicly revealed that when the Messiah did show up, not only did they dismiss him, but the vast majority of the misled Jewish population dismissed him as well.
Why?
The answer is simple.
This humble carpenter from Nazareth didn’t fit the rigid mold of inflexible man-made doctrines the religious intellectuals of the day had concocted and declared as truth.
Anyone who dared tell them otherwise were labelled as heretics.
This reminds me there’s something interesting Isaac Newton had to say about Biblical prophecy I’d like to share with you.
He said the purpose of Biblical prophecy is NOT to inform us of what’s going to happen in the future.
Instead, the purpose of prophecy was so when we looked back and saw that they had been fulfilled, we would stand in awe of the faithfulness of God and that in turn would strengthen our faith.
So what’s the big takeaway here?
The takeaway is simple.
Let’s be satisfied with what God has already plainly revealed to us.
Stop obsessing over the yet unrevealed future.
God’s got everything under control.
So just chill out and focus on His Torah and His entire Bible while praying for understanding and discernment of what He has already plainly revealed to us and expects us to obey.
Let the mysteries of God remain with Him until they unfold in His own good timing.
There is more than enough in our Bibles that even if we attempted to absorb it all, it would take more than a couple of lifetimes.
NEXT TIME WE BEGIN DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER 30
