An important reminder about the context of Deuteronomy Chapter 28.
Keep in mind that Moses is teaching for the second time the instructions he received from the Lord at Sinai to this 2nd Exodus generation.
The 1st Generation, because of their refusal to go forth and take the Promised Land, was cursed by God are now dead and buried in the wilderness where they rebelled.
Let’s not forget that it was this 1st Generation who…
…witnessed the smoke billowing up from the top of Mount Sinai…
…and…
…heard with their own ears the Lord’s thundering voice
…and…
…saw with their own eyes the giving of the covenant to Moses…
…AND…
…it was this 1st generation…
…who unanimously declared they would keep the Lord’s covenant.
Yet, thirty eight years later, instead of them, Moses is now presenting the covenant to their sons and daughters and making it clear that they must accept its terms and conditions just as their parents did.
There’s a very important principle being communicated here and it is this.
Our being redeemed or “saved” is NOT based on what our parents did.
It is based on what YOU agree to accept.
It doesn’t matter if you were raised by parents who were fervent believers in the Lord.
Nor does it matter if you’ve been participating in congregational worship and fellowship ever since you were a young child.
When it comes to your personal redemption with HASHEM, none of that counts for diddly.
You must personally declare allegiance to the covenant of HASHEM.
