As we slowly but surely continue to make our way through the Torah, the unshakable foundation of God’s Word, an important reminder is in order here.
Let’s not forget that Moses’ sermon on the mount at Moab was all about not just reviewing the commands first given at Sinai but also explaining and expounding on the spiritual principles underlying all of God’s instructions.
To do this was especially important because Israelite culture was about to undergo a huge transformation from that of being Bedouin wanderers to a settled people.
Moses is trying to make it clear to this second generation of Israelites that it just doesn’t matter that their current lifestyle or culture is about to change, God’s eternal law is pliable and durable enough to be applied in any circumstance.
Are you catching the relevance of this idea to our current situation?
We are also to adapt the principles behind the Torah commands to the much more advanced age we currently reside in.
That’s why it’s so important to understand the SPIRIT of the Law so that we can carry out the LETTER of the Law in harmony with the Lord’s Will in any situation and in any location.
Here’s what Messiah had to say about this.
“Don’t think that I have come
to abolish the Torah or the Prophets.
I have come not to abolish but to complete.
Yes indeed!
I tell you that until heaven and earth pass away,
not so much as a yud or a stroke will pass from the Torah
— not until everything that must happen has happened.
So whoever disobeys the least of these mitzvot and
teaches others to do so will be called the least in
the Kingdom of Heaven.
But whoever obeys them and so teaches will be called
great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
For I tell you that unless your righteousness is far
greater than that of the Torah-teachers and P’rushim,
you will certainly not enter the Kingdom of Heaven!”
Understand that we are to carry out the letter of the Law in the proper spirit.
Remember the Law is spiritual.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
We know that the law is spiritual;
but I am unspiritual,
sold as a slave to sin.
-Romans 7:14
