“Yes, Adonai your God will bless you, as he promised you — you will lend money to many nations without having to borrow, and you will rule over many nations without their ruling over you.”-Deuteronomy 15:6
Following on the heels of my last post dealing with the topic of lending money, the final words of verse 6 state…
“you will dominate nations,
they will not dominate you”.
There is a brutal reality being expressed here that we shouldn’t miss.
The reality is this..
…the person (or organization) who lends money to another person has a measure of power over the borrower.
This truth is echoed consistently in both the Tanach and the New Testament.
For example, we have this classic verse from the Book of Proverbs…
“The rich rule over the poor,
and the borrower is slave to the lender.”
-Proverbs 22:7
In our day and age, do you want to know the real reason why America is absolutely despised by so many nations around the world?
I’ll tell you why.
It isn’t so much about differing spiritual beliefs as many mistakenly think.
Let me share with you the dirty little truth that nobody likes to talk about except behind closed doors.
The answer is pretty simple.
The reason why many nations hate America…
…is because the USA lends money to poverty-stricken third world nations AND…
…demands repayment.
America is rich and the nations they lend to are poor and those poor nations know it.
They are very aware that without American cash coming in, they probably wouldn’t survive and they resent it like all hell.
What adds further fuel to the fire of their resentment is the fact that if America decided to show mercy and cancel their debts, these nations would be freed of the impossible debt burden they are currently carrying and…
…they also know that America is so rich and powerful that even if they forgave the debts, it would hardly put a dent in their economy.
That’s the real reason why America is so hated.
Those nations who are on the receiving end of American financial aid know that because of their debt they are essentially slaves to the US government.
Even if America isn’t arrogant about that fact or makes any open and aggressive attempts at domination, everyone knows who’s ruling over who in this lender-borrower relationship.
I’m sure many of you reading this may have had a similar experience if you ever had to struggle with severe credit card debt or student loans.
As the monthly bills came in, over time you probably grew to resent the organization that lent you the money even though you were the one who signed the papers and agreed to take out the loan.
No doubt about it.
Debt creates anxiety, bitterness and makes one a slave to the lender.
That is why there are so many warnings in Scripture to avoid borrowing money if at all possible.
Fortunately, the Lord promises in His Word that if we are faithful to Him and His Commands, we will never have to worry about falling into such a tragic situation.
