Ain’t it funny how our insecurities, lack of faith, or worry can twist our relationship with the Lord?
Worry led Avraham to lie to Abimelech about Sarah being his wife.
Lack of faith drove Sarah to push Avraham toward Hagar for a child when God’s promise felt delayed.
And insecurity made David eager to build a grand Temple for the Lord.
See, David’s biggest concern was to make sure God was always near him.
It was this worry that drove David’s desire to build a Temple in Jerusalem.
He wanted to keep God close to him.
It’s kinda funny if you think about it.
Because you can’t tie down the Lord to one spot.
That’s why God had to remind David He doesn’t need some house to live in.
And apparently, neither did the Messiah.
“Foxes have dens
and birds have nests,
but the Son of Man has
no place to lay his head.”
-Matthew 8:20
Look homies…
God doesn’t mince words when it comes to His view of a temple versus how people often see it.
In 2 Samuel 7:8, God flipped the script.
He said:
“Hold up, David.
Trying to help me by building a house is futile…
I’m the One doing everything for you.
I took you from watching sheep to make you king over My people.
I’ve been with you every step of the way.”
That’s why the Lord stressed He was the One who traveled with David.
He wasn’t being hauled around in a box by men.
We don’t haul God around (which is what fleshly mankind has been trying to do since day one)...
God is the one who hauls us around.
Ya feel me?
His presence doesn’t even require the presence of the Ark.
Or any other kind of dwelling place for that matter.
God had to keep driving this point home to David over and over again.
“You don’t need a Temple for me to be with you, David!”
And that’s your takeaway for today.
You don’t need a fancy church or synagogue for God to stay close to Him.
He “travels” with you!
In fact, He lives inside you via the Holy Spirit.
That’s right!
As believers, collectively, we’re His portable Temple, so to speak.
So let’s get things straight.
No building we could ever make with our hands could be glorious enough to hold God’s greatness.
If you think otherwise…
That’s your fleshly pride rearing its ugly head again.
See ya all next time.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“What agreement is there between
the temple of God and idols?
For we are the temple of the living God.
As God has said:
‘I will live with them
and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.’
Therefore,
‘Come out from them
and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
and I will receive you.’
And,
‘I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,
says the Lord Almighty.'”
-2 Corinthians 6:16-18
