“Then David danced and spun around with abandon before Adonai, wearing a linen ritual vest. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of Adonai with shouting and the sound of the shofar.“-2 Samuel 6:14-15
So we’re told David danced in an ephod, and there was shouting when the trumpet blasted.
However, just so there isn’t any misunderstanding.
It was NOT a metal trumpet that David blew.
It was a ram’s horn.
In other words, it was a SHOFAR.
And when we read about the shouting that was going on, that’s an inaccurate translation.
The actual Hebrew is TERUAH.
This is a special type of shofar blast.
In fact, there was another major Biblical event where the Shofar and its blasts played a significant role.
Remember when the Israelites took the city of Jericho?
They marched around the city blowing their shofars.
Can you guess what the shofar blasts were called?
That’s right.
It’s the same word, TERUAH.
Think of the shofar like a bugle—it was used to send messages to the troops…
And the teruah blast was a signal to pay attention.
Depending on the situation, it could signal a victory or be a call for battle.
Some congregations blow the shofar to call everyone to gather for worship.
So here’s your takeaway for today.
David’s joyful dance and the sound of the shofar remind us that worship isn’t just about words…
It’s about wholehearted expression without shame or embarrassment!
When we celebrate God, let it be with abandon instead of always worrying about what other people think.
Let’s give our whole selves to Him in spirit and truth, just as David did!
