“King David was told, ‘Adonai has blessed the house of ‘Oved-Edom and everyone who belongs to him, thanks to the ark of God.’ So David went and joyously brought the ark of God up from the house of ‘Oved-Edom into the City of David.“-2 Samuel 6:12
You know what annoys me about a lot of congregations?
How everyone is so overly uptight and formal.
Let’s contrast this with what we read in verse 12.
We’re told David “joyously” traveled with the Ark to bring it home.
The Hebrew word here is SIMCHAH or שִׂמְחָה.
This speaks of a proper reverent joy that is appropriate for worship.
It is not to be confused with the word SACHAQ or שָׂחַק which imparts a hedonistic, party atmosphere.
This was the word used to describe the inappropriate atmosphere during the first attempt to bring the Ark to Jerusalem.
So here’s what’s happening in our current context.
We’re told David danced with all his heart in front of the Ark, wearing ONLY a priest’s ephod!
Holy cow!
Can you picture that image?
This was a joyful parade with music, singing, and dancing!
But again, understand the vibe was respectful and focused on God.
Yet, I know a lot of modern Christians would get all uptight about such big, public acts of worship…
The takeaway here is simple.
Outward displays of worship and praise are totally fine.
But more important than that is your intent and attitude.
Just as God didn’t accept a person’s sacrifice if he wasn’t sincere…
At the end of the day, it’s what’s in our hearts that counts when we worship the Lord.
The fact that David was a man after God’s heart was on full display here!
