“The king and his men went to Yerushalayim to attack the Y’vusi, the inhabitants of that region. They taunted David, ‘You won’t get in here! Even the blind and the lame could fend you off!’ — in other words, they were thinking, ‘David will never get in here.’”-2 Samuel 5:6
Verse 6 tells us about a key event that changed the world.
It might even matter more now than when it first took place!
We’re told how Jerusalem, or Yerushalayim, became the capital of David’s kingdom.
Which if you think about it, is God’s Kingdom.
We’re told “the king and his men” went up to this city to attack it.
These men were not a huge army from the tribes or the nations.
Instead, they were David’s private soldiers—a small group of loyal, well-trained, and skilled fighters.
Keep that particular detail in your back pocket because it’s gonna play a major role later.
Modern archaeologists have discovered ancient clay tablets that give us a peek into this city’s incredible past.
If we had to guess a date for David’s attack on Jerusalem, it would be around 990 B.C., give or take a few years.
Now, to understand why Jerusalem plays such a central role in Scripture and prophecy, we need to dig deeper into its history.
So, beginning today and over the next couple of days, we’re gonna take a little detour to find out more about this amazing city.
Let’s get started!
First, Jerusalem was known and written about long before David’s time.
It’s one of the oldest cities in the world!
Its name shows up in the famous Ebla archives, which are about 15,000 clay tablets discovered in northern Syria in the late 1960s.
These tablets were written in the Akkadian language and speak of a king named Ibbit-Ilim, who ruled a city called Ebla.
Ebla was only about 150 miles from Haran, where Abraham resided for a time.
The tablets are from 2500 B.C., and they mention a Canaanite city called “Yerushalayim”, even describing its location.
There’s no doubt this “Yerushalayim” is the same place we call Jerusalem today.
But we’re not sure how long it existed before 2500 B.C.
But we know it was at least 500 years before Abraham and 1500 years before David attempted to conquer it.
So if I were to extract a takeaway from all of this, I’d say…
I mean Jerusalem is a perfect case in point!
This holy city played a major role in history thousands of years ago…
It appears frequently in our news today.
And prophecy tells us in due time, Jerusalem is going to become the focus of the whole world!
I think you’ll agree this process is happening right now.
Indeed, Jerusalem is the atomic center of the universe!
More potent than the combined force of 1000 nuclear bombs!!!
See ya all next time!
