Yesterday, I said that Scripture could essentially be divided into two parts.
The words of men who spoke under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
And words proceeding directly from the mouth of God Himself.
So whenever we come across the speech of God Himself, special attention should be paid to those words.
Onward.
I also said that the vast majority of Scripture is NOT God-breathed.
Rather, most of Scripture is God-inspired.
Does that mean we question the reliability of those parts that are not God-breathed?
Of course not, homies.
This logic was used by the ancient Jewish sages to rank the books that make up what we call the Apocrypha (Maccabees, Sirach, Tobit, and others) as being lower in inspiration than the remaining books of the Hebrew Bible.
But here’s the key point.
They were still considered inspired.
And similar logic was used by the Gentile Church Fathers to determine which writings to include in the New Testament.
This took place at what’s called the Councils of Nicea and Laodicea in the 4th and 5th centuries A.D.
So, having said all that, how are we to interpret David’s words in 2nd Samuel 22 and the first 7 verses in Chapter 23?
Simple.
In chapter 22, David’s words are recorded accurately, but his view of himself is way off.
He presents himself as pure and blameless despite the Bathsheba affair and her husband’s murder.
However, the first 7 verses in Chapter 23 are a different beast altogether.
These are NOT David’s own words.
They are God’s words spoken through David’s mouth.
Huge difference!
Thus, we have no right to question the truthfulness of those statements.
Instead, we are to take those words as perfect truth without suspicion or doubt.
And that’s your takeaway for today.
There are some words in the Bible that you can question.
Actually, lemme rephrase that.
There are some words in the Bible that you SHOULD question.
Especially the New Testament since it is NOT a God-breathed book.
When Paul says, “All Scripture is God-breathed,” he is ONLY referring to the “Old” Testament or the Tanakh.
There is no way in hell he is referring to the New Testament since them books weren’t even in existence at the time.
Are you feeling me here, homies?
However, when we come to God-breathed text, don’t be messing around with them words.
Those words are a flaming sword cutting deep down into the bone marrow.
They are perfect, unassailable truth and should be taken as such.
Done.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“But he answered and said, It is written,
Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceedeth
out of the mouth of God.“
-Matthew 4:4
“To the married
I give this command
(not I, but the Lord)…
But to the rest I say
(I, not the Lord)…”
-1 Corinthians 7:10–12
“All Scripture is God-breathed
and is useful for teaching,
rebuking, correcting and
training in righteousness,
so that the servant of God
may be thoroughly equipped
for every good work.”
-2 Timothy 3:16
