“For my house stands firm with God —
He made an everlasting covenant with me.
It is in order, fully assured,
that he will bring to full growth
all my salvation and every desire.”
-2 Samuel 23:5
I’ve been blogging through God’s Word for over a decade now.
And you know what I’ve realized?
Scripture is ALL you need for deep fulfillment and purpose in life.
It took a helluva long time for that truth to sink in on a proper, deep level, and not just be superficial head theory.
I’ll be honest and confess that throughout my blogging journey, I was still swayed by the sensual delights and temptations the world lusts after.
I still am from time to time.
I’m talking about the mad worship of material success and getting all the sex you can get until you can’t get it up anymore mentality that pervades in our sick times and is driven by multiple purchases of erectile dysfunction medicine (pardon me, ladies, for the vulgar expression there).
Yet, through persistent exposure to God’s Word via daily blogging…
Slowly but surely, the mind of my Creator…
The holy thoughts of the Almighty…
Have seeped their way into my soul and mind…
And have transformed me to the point where I no longer hunger for anything else, but to absorb more and more of Scripture.
Like if overnight I became a millionaire, I’d invest that money into God’s Word and spreading it to the nations.
Heck, I’m writing this post at exactly 3:59 AM Tokyo time right now, to give you an idea of just how intense my dedication to God’s Word is!
It’s like after feeding my soul highly nutrient-dense food in small amounts daily for years…
I no longer long for nor am I satisfied with junk food like Cheetos or frosted corn flakes anymore.
Although I still enjoy that processed crap from time to time.
Ya feeling me here?
Now, why do I bring this up?
Because it ties in directly with the latter half of verse 5 here in 2nd Samuel Chapter 23.
David says that the Lord will “bring to full growth all my salvation and every desire.”
Man, this sounds like something the Apostle Paul would say in the New Testament, doesn’t it?
What is David referring to when he speaks of God giving him his every desire?
Of course, he’s talking about matters of salvation.
The original Hebrew word for “desire” here reinforces this point.
The word is CHEPHETS or חֵפֶץ.
It’s a compact word, but boy does it carry a lot of theological weight.
At its core, it means delight, pleasure, or desire.
It is not a passing craving.
It points to intentional desire.
It’s something you want and lean toward.
In this context, it means the good things we yearn for that are connected to redemption and the things God wants His people to have.
Don’t forget the Lord is the author of life.
He knows what your soul really yearns for and is the only one capable of fulfilling it…
Even though you’ll try to fill the emptiness with all of the meaningless sensual nonsense the world offers.
In this sense, the word SHALOM would also be a strong contender as a synonym for CHEPHETS.
Other uses in Scripture would be Isaiah 53:10.
“Yet it pleased (ḥāphēts) the LORD to crush Him…”
This does NOT mean God enjoyed suffering.
It means it was within His deliberate purpose and will.
The term is also used in this famous verse from the Psalms.
“His delight (ḥēphets) is in the law of the LORD.”
-Psalm 1:2
This aligns with the sense of how it applies to me and my Biblical blogging journey that I was talking about.
So the takeaway for today is that when Scripture talks about the Lord fulfilling the desires of your heart…
He ain’t talking about granting your lustful porn fantasy desires or something.
It doesn’t mean “desires” as a modern and materialistic Westerner would understand it.
The sense of this word would be as far from the ridiculous Prosperity Doctrine as the earth is from the heavens.
We’re talking about desires from a spiritual perspective here…things of heaven.
To conclude, here’s what unbelieving mankind really needs to come to terms with.
The things of the Lord are what the world REALLY, REALLY, REALLY DEEPLY DESIRES..
Even though the devil’s got them fooled into believing otherwise.
In closing, I leave you with this excerpt from the Psalms:
“Open my eyes that I may behold
Wonderful things from Your law.”
– Psalm 119:18
Done.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“Do not store up for yourselves
wealth here on earth,
where moths and rust destroy,
and burglars break in and steal.
Instead, store up for yourselves
wealth in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust destroys,
and burglars do not break in or steal.
For where your wealth is,
there your heart will be also.”
-Matthew 6:19-21
“Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceedeth
out of the mouth of God.”
-Matthew 4:4
“I will put My laws into their minds,
and write them on their hearts…”
-Hebrews 8:10
