Today, we begin 2nd Samuel Chapter 23.

The first 7 verses of this chapter are normally considered to be David’s last words.
That’s not correct.
If you want to read David’s last words, you need to go to 1st Kings, Chapter 2.
That’s where you’ll find David’s final words to his son Solomon.
In this deathbed speech, David gave some warnings and instructions, including taking care of some unfinished vengeance.
In other words, David’s last words were private and personal.
That’s a little different than what we’re reading here.
What we’ve got here is something more similar to the Psalms.
Something meant to be handed down to future generations as part of David’s spiritual witness to the greatness of the Lord.
This is his final oracle as opposed to being his last words.
Having said that, there is something distinctly unique about this song compared to the Psalm we studied in chapter 22.
It is very prophetic in nature.
Don’t get me wrong.
Chapter 22 did contain some prophetic elements.
But not to the extent of this post.
This song in chapter 23 is David’s final, prophetic message.
It connects his kingship to what is still to come.
However, you know what’s really fascinating about this post?
And this is something no Christian pastor anywhere on planet earth is even aware of.
This song is an extension of Balaam’s prophetic oracle given centuries earlier in the Book of Numbers (specifically chapter 24).
You remember who that homie was, don’t you?
He was the gentile seer who was hired to curse Israel…
But ended up doing the exact opposite.
So what you’re about to witness is one of the most mind-blowing examples of what theologians call “progressive revelation” you’ll encounter in a long time.
Stay tuned as we compare this song of David to Balaam’s prophecy in Numbers 24.
