“He lowered heaven and came down
with thick darkness under his feet.”
-2 Samuel 22:10
Verse 10 gives us a picture we should recognize right off the bat…
Provided we are well-versed in Torah, that is.
We’re given an image of the Lord Himself descending from the heavenly realms down to the earthly plane.
Yet he is surrounded by a thick blanket of darkness separating Him from mankind.
Here’s the Torah reference pointing to this image:
“Moshe brought the people out of the camp to meet God; they stood near the base of the mountain. Mount Sinai was enveloped in smoke, because ADONAI descended onto it in fire– its smoke went up like the smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently. As the sound of the shofar grew louder and louder, Moshe spoke; and God answered him with a voice. ADONAI came down onto Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; then ADONAI called Moshe to the top of the mountain; and Moshe went up.”-Exodus 19:17-20
We’re told in these verses that Moses went up into the thick darkness (metaphorically presented as smoke) to get the 10 Commandments.
This ties into what I talked about yesterday concerning the dangers of ascribing human attributes to the Lord.
The darkness served as a veil, creating an impenetrable barrier between God and man.
Why was that so important?
Because homies, we’re told no man can see God’s face and live!
Ya feeling me here?
This veil of darkness also symbolizes the PAROKHET.
This was the veil that separated mankind from the Tabernacle’s innermost chamber, otherwise known as the Holy of Holies.
So this might seem like a repeat of what I said yesterday, but the takeaway is clear.
There is such a huge gap between us and God that it is unimaginable.
It seems like every religion in the world tries to bridge this gap between mankind and deity in various ways.
Some religions say you are actually a god yourself, and that you just need to wake up to the fact.
Welcome to the New Age!
Some religions say that God became a man and literally sacrificed Himself on a cross to pay for the sins of mankind.
Can you say, “Hello, Christianity?”
Man, the blasphemy of this is just insane!
Other religions prescribe a bunch of flesh-based works, such as child sacrifice…
Or mortifying the flesh in a variety of ridiculous ways, in an attempt to appease God.
To close…
And this is your takeaway…
The Bible makes three things clear.
FIRST, there is only ONE God.
SECOND, this one God is NOT a man, and never will be one.
THIRD, there is only one mediator between God and men, the man Messiah Yeshua.
Done.
