“For you, Adonai, are my lamp;
Adonai lights up my darkness.
With you, I can run through
a whole troop of men,
With my God, I can leap a wall.”
-2 Samuel 22:29-30
Verse 29 explains how the Lord repeatedly rescued David when he battled his enemies.
We’re told the first step was deliverance from darkness.
In Scripture, darkness is more than a physical phenomenon.
It indicates spiritual qualities such as obscurity and blindness.
The opposite qualities are light and illumination that point to truth, deliverance, and salvation.
When David says that Adonai is the source of illumination, this means God delivers him from darkness and brings light (clarity) to a situation that was previously beset with chaos and confusion.
You should be familiar with the Hebrew word used for “darkness” here.
It is CHOSHEK.
Again, this is a spiritual darkness as opposed to the absence of sun rays.
This is the same word used to refer to the supernatural blackness the Lord inflicted upon Egypt during the Exodus.
The opposite word is OWR.
OWR means light.
We’re first introduced to this word in the opening verses of Genesis:
“Then God said,
‘Let there be light‘;
and there was light.”
-Genesis 1:3
Like CHOSHEK, it carries a spiritual meaning, referring to God’s wisdom and enlightenment.
So here’s your takeaway for today.
Whenever you’re facing a troubling situation and feel like there’s no way out…
It’s because you’re trapped in spiritual darkness that keeps you confused and stuck.
That’s why you feel trapped in a corner.
What’s the solution?
You need God’s illumination to shine the way so you know how to move forward.
So don’t turn to
Self-help books…
New Age teachings…
Or Law of Attraction life coaches…
To free yourself from darkness.
Turn to Adonai’s enlightenment to be freed.
Ya feel me?
Done.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“Again, Yeshua spoke to them, saying,
‘I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will
not walk in darkness,
but will have the light of life.'”
-John 8:12
“The people living in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the
land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.”
– Matthew 4:16
“He is a light for revelation
to the Gentiles,
and the glory of
your people, Israel.”
– Luke 2:32
“No one lights a lamp and
hides it in a clay jar
or puts it under a bed.
Instead, they put it on a stand,
so that those who come in
can see the light.
Your eye is the lamp of your body.
When your eyes are healthy,
your whole body also is full of light.
But when they are unhealthy,
your body also is full of darkness.”
– Luke 11:33-36
