“He sent out arrows and scattered them;
with lightning, he routed them.”
-2 Samuel 22:15
In verse 15, we get another burst of storm imagery.
Lightning bolts are pictured as the Lord’s arrows, shot straight from heaven.
These arrows represent the Lord’s blows of judgment aimed at the people on earth.
Some of what David describes is broad and poetic, while other parts are very specific.
The lightning here reflects a general principle.
God judges.
That is simply who He is.
Alright, moving on.
Let’s look at verse 16:
“The channels of the sea appeared,
The foundations of the world were exposed,
at Adonai’s rebuke,
at the blast of breath from His nostrils.”
This verse clearly points back to the Red Sea.
David reminds us how completely God cleared a path for Israel.
It was so thorough that the seabed itself was exposed.
With women, children, and the elderly in the group, that kind of divine road-clearing made their escape from Pharaoh not just possible but fast.
Again, David describes a massive burst of wind from the Lord’s nostrils that is so strong it exposes the foundations of the earth.
You can see why the Red Sea would be the perfect story for David to recall at this point in his life.
Why?
Because it speaks of divine deliverance from certain destruction.
And what makes it so powerful is this.
It is not a vague concept.
It is not some abstract spiritual principle that puts you to sleep faster than a trigonometry textbook.
It is a real, historical rescue.
A specific moment where the Lord saved His people from death and disaster.
Which brings us to today’s takeaway.
The Lord our God literally steps down into our mess and rescues us.
He knows we have rent to pay.
He knows about the medications we need just to manage our illnesses.
And sometimes He might decide to heal us outright so we don’t need the meds anymore.
He knows who is against us.
He knows the dangers coming our way.
He knows all of it.
And He does not just know.
He acts.
Powerfully.
Vigorously.
To protect us and keep us safe.
Ya feel me?
Done.
