“Then the men of Y’hudah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Y’hudah. They informed David that the men of Yavesh-Gil‘ad were the ones who had buried Sha’ul.”-2 Samuel 2:4
The men of Judah who came to make David their king were most likely the same men who earlier were called “the elders of Judah”.
These men were the head honchos of the tribe of Judah, and some of them may have come from the tribe of Simeon.
They had received part of the war booty David took from the Amalekites.
David wisely used those gifts to fix his relationship with his tribe due to his escaping to Philistia and giving his loyalty to a Philistine Lord to stay safe from King Saul.
Did these leaders of Judah actually anoint David with oil in a ceremony to make him king?
We don’t know for sure.
I’m not even confident it’s appropriate to use the word “anointing” in this context.
I say that because anointing was a special act, usually reserved for only prophets or priests.
Since choosing a king was seen as only something God could do, it’s hard to think the men of Judah would do this without a priest or prophet even though none is mentioned.
Do you remember years earlier when Samuel anointed David?
Recall that Samuel was BOTH a priest and a prophet.
At that time, David had no idea what was going on, and that he was being anointed to become Israel’s next king.
So the takeaway here is that in 2nd Samuel chapter 2, what’s already been accomplished in heaven is now taking place on earth.
David, who God chose long ago to be king, is finally assuming the throne.
But even now, it’s likely only the people living in Hebron, an important area economically and militarily, would follow him.
It would take months, or even years, for all the clans of Judah to accept David as their leader.
And was it not the same with Yeshua when he came?
In the beginning, his following was very limited.
But today his followers number in the millions, if not billions.
I hope you can see the messianic pattern unfolding before our very eyes here.
See ya all next time.
