“David took a census of the people who were with him and appointed over them commanders of thousands and of hundreds.”-2 Samuel 18:1
Why did David take a census?
It was purely a military thing.
It was customary for a king or military leader to take count of his men before a big battle.
It wasn’t just to see how many soldiers they had (they usually already knew), but to keep track of names and put people into groups under different leaders.
It also helped organize the army and later revealed the number of those lost or captured in the battle.
Now, Absalom had a bigger army than David’s.
But most of his soldiers weren’t trained, didn’t follow orders well, and were probably only there because they had to be.
David’s army, on the other hand, was made up of battle-tested former soldiers who were motivated to fight for God’s chosen king.
Remember, David was one of Israel’s greatest military heroes since Joshua.
This leads to our takeaway for today.
Absalom’s army may have been bigger.
But as I just said, most of his soldiers were untrained, disorganized, and only there because of political pressure.
On the other hand, David’s army may have been smaller.
But every soldier knew their role, had real battle experience, and fought with heart for God’s chosen king.
When the two armies clashed, it wasn’t numbers that would decide the outcome.
It would be skill, courage, and passion.
And that’s your lesson for today.
Even against a much bigger force, a well-led, committed team can turn the tide and win the day.
Or another way, I like to put it:
One with God is always a majority.
Ya feel me?
See ya next time.
