“After they had left, the two climbed out of the cistern and went and told King David, ‘Get up and cross the river, because Achitofel has given such-and-such advice against you.‘”-2 Samuel 17:21
So Absalom’s soldiers, who were on the hunt for Y’honatan and Achima’atz, had left.
The coast was now clear.
The woman helped the boys out of the cistern, who quickly went to David to give him the news about the plot against him.
Now, notice in verse 21 that it was decided to act upon Achitofel’s plans.
Why?
Because Hushai’s plan didn’t require immediate action.
It involved gathering a huge army from across Israel.
That would take loads of time.
So David made the wise choice of acting on the instructions Achitofel gave Absalom.
At this moment, David and his men were located on the West Bank of the Jordan River.
His next move would be to cross over into Trans-Jordanian territory.
To avoid all danger, he and his men crossed the river overnight.
So what’s the takeaway to be extracted from this?
Yesterday, we talked about the importance of choosing which of God’s commandments to obey when multiple commands conflict with each other.
We have to weigh lesser sins against greater sins.
Likewise, as we see David doing, we also have to exercise wisdom in deciding which plan of action to take, given the circumstances and information we have available to us.
David was aware that Absalom was given two plans, one from Achitofel and one from Hushai.
But he didn’t know which one Absalom would choose to act on.
So he ran the calculations in his head.
When he realized that he and his men would be in great danger if Absalom acted on Achitofel’s plan, he made the wise decision to escape from his current location.
We, too, whether in business or life, must also weigh multiple variables when making important decisions.
And then ACT on our decisions by taking vigorous action to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.
Ya feel me?
Done.
