“A messenger came to David saying, ‘The men of Israel have aligned themselves with Avshalom.’ David said to all his servants with him in Yerushalayim, ‘Get up! We must flee! Otherwise, none of us will escape from Avshalom. Hurry, and leave; or he will soon overtake us, attack us and put the city to the sword.'”-2 Samuel 15:13-14
So the seeds of rebellion that Absalom planted around Israel began to grow like poisonous weeds, spreading across a fertile field.
This was no small-scale uprising.
The majority population had turned against David.
When David’s men caught wind of the seditious wildfire spreading, in a panic, they informed the king.
David’s reaction was instant
Time to hightail it outta Israel, homies!
One cannot help but see the irony in the situation.
David had gone full circle.
He started as a fugitive being hunted by Saul in the wilderness.
Then, he assumed the throne as king.
And now he was back to being a fugitive on the run in the wilderness again.
The Scripture makes it clear this was happening because of the curse on David’s life.
Alrighty, I wanna show you an interesting pattern that connects to a famous event in the New Testament.
Read the following verses:
“So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the housetop go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath.”-Matthew 24:15-20
What do we see happening in these New Testament verses?
In 2nd Samuel 15, the people who stayed true to God’s chosen king had to run for their lives when a wicked challenger appeared on the scene.
This gives us a sneak peek of what’s gonna happen in the future, folks!
A lot of folks who were once loyal to the real king are gonna turn against him.
The reasons for their betrayal would be varied.
Some switched sides because they were deceived.
Others because their faith didn’t have strong roots in the first place.
So when the pressure came, they caved in quickly.
And finally, those who remained loyal would end up fleeing for their lives.
The takeaway for today is something I’ve said many times before.
Understanding the Scripture is all about grasping the patterns, folks.
What was established in the “Old” will be revealed in the New.
Ya feel me?
The next time we meet, I’ll show you another incredible pattern established here in 2nd Samuel Chapter 15 that fleshes itself out in the New Testament.
See ya all next time.
