We’re told Tamar was stunningly beautiful…
And that, combined with Amnon’s lust, led to one of the most heartbreaking stories in all of Scripture.
However, there’s a lot more to this story than meets the eye.
I’m talking about the political forces driving the behavior of the main characters.
Let me break things down for you so it’s clear.
First, Amnon was David’s firstborn son.
You know what that means?
That means he was next in line to succeed the throne of Israel.
This was understood, and there was no disputing it.
On the other hand, we have Amnon’s half-brother Absalom.
He was another son of David, but their mothers were different.
Now here’s the thing.
This should come as no surprise, but Absalom was also drooling over the throne.
To achieve that end, he had built up his group of loyal followers over the years.
Now when Amnon raped Absalom’s sister Tamar (Absalom and Tamar had the same father and mother)…
Amnon was sending out a loud and clear message that he was the king’s favorite son…
And could do whatever the hell he wanted.
Absalom got the message.
He understood Amnon was flexing his muscles in an arrogant display of power.
Amnon was telling Absalom…
“I’m the boss around here, and you’re beneath me.”
Back then, forcing yourself on a rival’s wife, girlfriend, or even sister was a brutal way to say, “I own you.”
It wasn’t just about the act…
It was about power, pride, and showing who was dominant.
So yeah, what Amnon did to Tamar was disgusting.
But the takeaway here is not to miss the bigger political picture.
This wasn’t just about lust.
This story was about pride, power, and treating people like pawns.
And that’s what makes this story so heartbreaking.
This wasn’t just a family tragedy…
It was a political earthquake.
And Absalom?
Of course, he was enraged that his sister had been violated…
But at the same time, he was a cunning man.
He realized an opportunity had just fallen into his lap.
He could use Amnon’s crime to his advantage.
As the old saying goes:
“Never let a good crisis go to waste.”
Do you see what I’m getting at?
If Absalom played his cards right…
He might just be able to take the throne of Israel.
And Amnon…
As far as Absalom was concerned…
Boy oh boy, the payback was coming…
And it wasn’t gonna be pretty.
