If there’s any one key lesson we can learn from the story of David and Bathsheba, it is this:
Sin gives birth to sin.
Little sins lead to committing more little sins.
And then those little sins turn into big sins.
And before we know it, it’s like we’re drowning in quicksand.
That’s exactly what happened to David.
When he first laid eyes on Bathsheba…
The thought that he might have to arrange to kill her husband was the farthest thing from his mind.
His first thought was just…
“Wow, that’s a stunningly beautiful woman!”
Being a king, he probably also thought…
“I’d like to add that one to my harem.”
Bottom line, his brain was overtaken by lust.
That was the beginning of the end for David.
After sleeping with Bathsheba, it resulted in an unexpected pregnancy.
David tried to cover that up by pulling her husband from that battlefield and doing his darnest to get Uriyah to go home to sleep with his wife.
But Uriyah refused, feeling that would be a betrayal to his comrades out on the battlefield.
After that, David went into full panic mode.
His next step led him to plotting and then the eventual murder of Uriyah.
Tragically, things didn’t stop there.
Again, in another attempt to cover things up, David married Bathsheba.
He was confident this would be viewed as a righteous and merciful action.
Bathsheba gave birth to a son and David assumed he was scot-free.
Well, David might have averted the political ramifications of his sin…
But the Lord’s economy doesn’t operate that way.
We’re going to soon see that sin always demands a payment.
ALWAYS.
God’s justice CANNOT and WILL NOT be set aside for anyone, ever!
Ya feel me?
So here’s your takeaway for today.
While many people have never committed adultery or murder like David did…
In a very real sense, the whole world stands guilty of bloodshed—just like he was.
Every one of us has committed grievous sins against a holy God. And truth be told, none of us deserve to be in His presence.
There are only two possible outcomes.
Either we pay for our sins with our own lives…
Or someone else takes our place and pays the price on our behalf.
And that’s exactly what the gospel is all about.
See you all next time.

“For God so loved the world,
that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him
should not perish,
but have everlasting life.”
