“David comforted his wife Bat-Sheva, came to her and went to bed with her; she gave birth to a son and named him Shlomo. Adonai loved him.”-2 Samuel 12:24
Any mom would be heartbroken to lose her baby, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the birth.
Bathsheba was no exception.
Verse 24 tells us that David comforted her and then went to bed with her.
The result was the birth of a child who would become the next king of Israel.
So it seems like Bathsheba was destined to become the queen mother after all!
Now, there are a couple of fascinating details here we shouldn’t overlook.
First, isn’t it interesting that the child born from illicit sex wasn’t allowed to be king?
That privilege would be passed on to Solomon.
Why didn’t God just let the first baby live and choose Solomon as king later?
This brings to mind an intriguing Biblical pattern that surfaces repeatedly.
I’m talking about how God often takes the firstborn’s rights and gives them to another child.
This happened with Abraham’s firstborn son, Ishmael…
Remember, Ishmael was the product of unfaithfulness on Sarai and Abraham’s part.
When Isaac, the second son, was born, God chose him as the heir.
The same thing also happened with Jacob’s firstborn son, Reuben.
Normally, Reuben would’ve received the firstborn blessing.
However, Jacob passed him over and gave the firstborn inheritance to his other son, Judah, instead.
Why?
Because of Reuben’s infidelity.
Recall that Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine Bilhah.
So that’s your takeaway, homies.
Sexual sin always comes with consequences.
The first baby born from David and Bathsheba’s affair died.
Ishmael, born from Abraham’s mistake with Hagar, was sent away.
Reuben lost his blessing because he slept with his dad’s concubine.
In every case, God stepped in…
And someone else got the blessing instead.
That’s why we’ve gotta take sexual purity seriously.
Because no matter how good or right it might feel in the moment…
Unfaithfulness NEVER leads to anything good.
But when we walk in purity…
We stay in step with God’s plan.
Do you feel me here?
