“I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives to embrace. I gave you the house of Israel and the house of Y’hudah. And if that had been too little, I would have added to you a lot more.”-2 Samuel 12:8
So when the Lord tells David…
“And if that had been too little, I would have added to you a lot more”….
What is He referring to exactly?
I would have to agree with the Jewish sages on this one.
They point out that the context is about the story of a rich man who possessed an abundance of flocks and herds.
And what did the flocks and herds represent?
They were symbolic of the man’s huge harem, right?
So no doubt, this was analogous to David’s harem…
Or to put things more directly.
The Lord was referring to the number of women David had at his disposal to satisfy his urges.
The essence of God’s statement is that David’s many wives and concubines reflected His abundant blessing.
But if those blessings weren’t enough…
The Lord would’ve been happy to provide more female companionship to satisfy David’s desires.
There’s no way around this…
Despite Christianity’s prudish attitude toward sex…
And being handcuffed by a doctrine that says sex is only permissible in a lifelong, one-man-one-woman marriage…
The Scriptures beg to differ all over the place.
And when I say the Scriptures, again, I’m ONLY referring to the Hebrew Bible…
NOT the New Testament…
The gentile church will usually quote some mumbo jumbo about Paul saying, “a bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife,” blah, blah, blah from 1st Timothy Chapter 3 to promote their doctrines in this area.
Read this article to get a better understanding.
This leads us to our takeaway for today.
Do you just blindly accept what your pastor, preacher, or teacher says without doing a little thinking for yourself?
Do you ever stop to question whether what you’ve been taught actually lines up with the Scriptures?
Too many believers build their faith on secondhand opinions, church traditions, or isolated New Testament verses without ever digging into the full counsel of God.
Whether it’s about sex, the Trinity, or the claim that Jesus did away with the Law…
You owe it to yourself…
And to God…
To be a good Berean…
And test what you’ve been told.
Because sometimes, what sounds holy…
Just ain’t biblical.
Are you feeling me, homies?
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“All Scripture is God-breathed
and is useful for teaching, rebuking,
correcting and training in righteousness,
so that the servant of God
may be thoroughly equipped
for every good work.”
-2 Timothy 3:16
