“I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives to embrace. I gave you the house of Isra’el and the house of Y’hudah. And if that had been too little, I would have added to you a lot more.”-2 Samuel 12:8
So the Lord’s divine rebuke towards David has begun.
What does he start with?
He reminds David that while he may be the King of Israel…
He also has a master he must bow down to.
And that master is YEHOVAH.
The Lord makes it clear that He elevated David to the throne…
He rescued David from the murderous clutches of his predecessor, Saul…
He gave David his former master’s house…
And He established him as ruler over Judah and Israel.
Let’s break these statements down.
In verse 8, the master referred to here is King Saul.
The master’s wives are King Saul’s harem.
What’s interesting is that there’s no record of King Saul amassing a large number of wives and concubines.
After he died, his son Ishboshesh ruled for a time…
But recall, he wasn’t the one who held power.
His general, Avner, was the bad dude running the show.
So, given his limited responsibilities, he probably focused on growing whatever small harem he inherited from his father.
I still find that surprising, however.
Because Ishbosheth was such a spineless, ineffective ruler, in my opinion.
Nevertheless, when David became king, he inherited not only Saul’s wives but also the expanded version thanks to Ishbosheth.
Onward.
When it says David received his master’s house, it’s NOT referring to any physical property or real estate…
It’s probably talking about Michal, Saul’s daughter.
David didn’t inherit Saul’s family.
Again, we know Saul’s estate wasn’t part of it either.
That went to Mephibosheth after being managed by a gentile overseer, Tziva, for a while.
Alrighty, let’s switch over to the takeaway.
The main takeaway was right there at the beginning of this post:
David may have been king over all Israel…
But he still had someone above him…
Someone he had to answer to.
Yeshua, the Son of David, showed us the same pattern.
He lived it out perfectly.
He always deferred to his Father in heaven…
Always made it clear who his true Master was.
Let those who have ears to hear, listen!
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“Yeshua gave them this answer:
‘Very truly I tell you, the son
can do nothing by himself;
he can do only what he sees
his Father doing,
because whatever the Father does,
the son also does.
For the Father loves the Son
and shows him all he does.
Yes, and he will show him
even greater works than these,
so that you will be amazed.”
-John 5:19-20
“You heard me say,
‘I am going away and
I am coming back to you.’
If you loved me,
you would be glad that
I am going to the Father,
for the Father is greater than I.”
-John 14:28
“Yeshua said to him,
‘Why do you call Me good?
No one is good except God alone.‘”
-Mark 10:18
