“Then David said to Uriyah, ‘Go down to your house and wash your feet.’ Uriyah left the king’s palace and was followed by a present of food from the king. But Uriyah slept at the door of the king’s palace with all the servants of his lord and didn’t go down to his house.”-2 Samuel 11:8-9
David told Uriyah to “Go down to your house and wash your feet.”
But Uriyah didn’t listen.
Instead, he slept at the king’s palace with all the servants.
This might’ve seemed like rebellion on Uriyah’s part…
But understand what David told Uriyah wasn’t necessarily an official order.
It was more like David was permitting Uriyah to return home for rest and rejuvenation.
But this does bring up an interesting question.
What was Uriyah thinking when he ignored David’s hint to go home?
He had no idea that David had slept with his wife.
So what was going on inside his head?
Well, here’s the thing.
Uriyah sensed there had to be a more important reason why David had called him up from the battlefield.
You don’t call a high-ranking soldier all the way home just to deliver some message.
Any messenger boy could’ve done that!
Uriyah knew something was up.
So that’s why he didn’t return home.
He thought it much wiser to stay close and be ready to find out what the king really wanted.
However, once David caught wind that Uriyah didn’t pay heed to his suggestion, he was surprised.
So he called Uriyah back to ask why.
And thus begins an incredible conversation filled with deep psychology that we’ll get into next time.
But for now, let’s switch over to the takeaway.
Notice how David’s plans to cover up his sin ain’t going too well.
He was desperate for Uriyah to sleep with his wife so no one would suspect the baby was his.
But it didn’t happen according to plan.
I’ve noticed this many times in my own life as well.
Whenever I’ve tried to subvert God’s commands and do things my way…
Holy cow did things turn out to be a disaster!
No matter how smart and logical my decisions seemed at the time.
That’s what happens when we make decisions in the flesh instead of in the Spirit.
Ya feel me?
Let those who have ears to hear listen to what I’m saying.
