I know a couple of days ago I painted Bathsheba as a poor victim who was pressured into having sex with David.
But upon further reflection, you know what homies?
A different picture emerges!
The bottom line is nobody forced Bathsheba.
It’s not like she was kidnapped or something.
Sure, there might’ve been some hesitation in the beginning.
But let’s get real folks.
Bedding down with the King of Israel for sure had its pull.
Combine that with the fact her husband had been gone for weeks…
The temptation would’ve been hard for a normal, healthy woman like her to resist.
On top of that, later on, in the first couple of chapters of the book of 1st Kings, we’re gonna see a bold, almost cocky Bathsheba emerge.
She was the kind of woman who knew what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to speak up.
She wasn’t a timid person by any stretch of the imagination.
She had guts and ambition.
So when we look at her story with David, it’s pretty clear she wasn’t a woe-is-me helpless victim.
She played her part in it too.
Another interesting part we shouldn’t overlook is that David didn’t try to keep things quiet by sneaking over to see Bathsheba himself.
He sent messengers.
Let’s be honest, folks.
Palace servants gossip.
I’m sure David was aware of that.
There was no way his actions were gonna stay a secret for long.
So what’s the takeaway for today?
The takeaway is that temptation is tricky…
Especially when it comes wrapped in power and charm…
Or a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
The bottom line is that both David and Bathsheba were put in a situation where they were both tempted.
David was tempted when he caught Bathsheba bathing…
And Bathsheba was tempted when David tried to seduce her.
Both David and Bathsheba made choices…
And those choices came with big consequences.
So the next time you’re in a situation where you’re being tempted.
Pause for a second and think.
Because what feels good at the moment might come back to bite you later.
See ya all next time.
