It turns out archeologists have discovered David’s palace.
So we know exactly where he was when he first set eyes on Bathsheba.
It sat high up on the eastern slope, at the north end of the City of David.
That means everything else in the city was lower than his palace.
Bathsheba’s house?
Probably just inside the city wall near the Kidron ravine.
Why such a privileged location?
Well, her husband, Uriyah, was a military officer…
So he was allowed to live nearby from the king.
When David sent out messengers to find out who this beautiful woman was…
It turns out she was a married woman.
Her father was a man called Eilam…
Her husband was referred to as Uriyah the Hittite.
Does this mean he was considered a Gentile?
Well, I guess you could consider him a Gentile (non-Hebrew) by birth.
The name “Hittite” shows he came from the Hittite people.
This was one of the Canaanite nations living in the land before the Israelites took possession.
Having said that, even though Uriyah was born a Gentile, he clearly served in Israel’s army and was close to King David.
That suggests he had fully joined the Israelite community…
Either as a resident alien (called a ger in Hebrew)…
Or possibly even as a convert who worshiped YAHWEH, the God of Israel.
Scripture doesn’t say if he was fully converted, but his loyalty, faithfulness, and integration into Israelite society speak volumes.
Possibly, somewhere along the line, his family switched allegiance to the God of Israel and thus became full-fledged Israelites.
The bottom line is he was not treated like an outsider.
Also, take into account that Uriyah literally means “light of Yah” or “light of God.”
With such a godly name, how can we assume anything other than this man was fully grafted into the commonwealth of Israel?
Ya feel me?
This leads us to an inspiring takeaway for today.
Uriyah is evidence that no matter what your background…
If you surrender to…
And pledge allegiance to the God of Israel…
You can and will be accepted as a full-fledged member of the Kingdom of God.
You could even come from the cursed line of the Canaanites…
It doesn’t matter.
God accepts all who drop their idolatry and fornications and sincerely come to Him!
Can I get an amen in the house?
