I gotta question for you…
When bad things happen in your life…
What is your first response?
Do you look up to the heavens and ask…
“God, why oh why is this happening?”
“Have you abandoned me?”
“Is this happening because of this or that sin I committed?!”
See, here’s the thing.
In 2nd Samuel Chapter 9, King David faced a similar dilemma.
He knew something had gone very wrong.
In the past when he and his men went out to battle…
Optimism was in the air…
Their opposition would tremble…
And the victories came easy.
But this time around…
Israel’s enemies were fearless.
The loss of Hebrew life was HUGE…
And defeat seemed a very real possibility.
The Psalm writers questioned whether the Lord was still with them or not.
They also prayed for His divine assistance during these difficult times…
That was the right thing to do…
For they understood all victory is God’s at the end of the day.
But here’s the thing.
Whether it was the ancient Israelites in their time…
Or us today…
Whenever misfortune occurs…
We have this habit of automatically asking if God has abandoned us.
However, is that the right question to ask?
Maybe there’s a better question.
Like…
“How have I maybe drifted away from Him?”
That’s a more logical question, don’t you think?
Why?
If the God we worship is faithful…
If He always keeps His promises…
Then maybe it’s not Him?
Maybe it’s us?
Have we flirted with idols or the temptations of this world?
Are we keeping His commandments and His Shabbat?
Do we study His Word daily?
Ya feel me?
Just some food for thought for you today.
Shabbat Shalom.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“But be ye doers of the word,
and not hearers only,
deceiving your own selves.
For if any be a hearer of the word,
and not a doer,
he is like unto a man beholding
his natural face in a glass:
For he beholdeth himself,
and goeth his way,
and straightway forgetteth
what manner of man he was.”
-James 1:22-24
“Therefore we ought to give
the more earnest heed to the things
which we have heard,
lest at any time
we should let them slip.”
-Hebrews 2:1
“Examine yourselves,
whether ye be in the faith;
prove your own selves.
Know ye not your own selves,
how that Messiah Yeshua is in you,
except ye be reprobates?”
-2 Corinthians 13:5
“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee,
because thou hast left thy first love.
Remember therefore from whence
thou art fallen, and repent,
and do the first works;
or else I will come unto thee quickly,
and will remove thy candlestick
out of his place, except thou repent.”
-Revelation 2:4-5
“But let a man examine himself,
and so let him eat of that bread,
and drink of that cup.”
-1 Corinthians 11:28
