One point should now be clear.
From a covenant perspective, God is King over those He has saved…
Which means those He has saved are subject to His laws.
You can’t have one without the other.
You can’t just walk down the aisle at some evangelical gathering, mumble the sinner’s prayer and then go right back to your bacon cheeseburger-eating un-kosher lifestyle.
Ya feel me?
God was Israel’s king…
But now Israel wanted to replace Him with a human ruler.
In response, the Lord is warning them when they do that they’re going to be subject to the laws set down by a flawed and imperfect human being…
Which means the justice this new king administers will fall far short of God’s perfect justice.
That’s the issue we’re gonna be dealing with from this point onward in the Scriptures.
What kind of justice system will the new king establish and administer?
This is important because God has created us with the desire and need for a strong king to rule over us.
Without a Godly king, mankind naturally descends into chaos…
Which is pretty much what’s happening in the world today.
So again, the issue has never been whether or not Israel should have a king.
But WHAT KIND of King?
One guided by the Holy Spirit and God’s Torah.
Or one guided by his own flesh and selfish desires.
The next time we meet, we’ll witness Samuel anoint Saul to be Israel’s first king.
