“Near some sheep pens along the way was a cave, and Sha’ul went inside to relieve himself. It happened that David and his men were sitting in the recesses at the back of the cave; and David’s men said to him, “Look! The day has come that Adonai told you about when he said to you, ‘I will turn your enemy over to you, and you will do to him whatever seems good to you.’”-1 Samuel 24:3-4
While Saul was searching for David with his men, the call of nature seized him.
So he went into a nearby cave to take care of business…
And wouldn’t you know it?
The cave Saul stepped inside happened to be where David and his men were hiding.
David’s men couldn’t believe their good luck!
They told David…
“Look! The day has come that Adonai told you about when he said to you, ‘I will turn your enemy over to you, and you will do to him whatever seems good to you.’”
There’s only one little problem with that statement.
It wasn’t true.
That’s right.
God never said anything like that to David.
This was just typical Middle Eastern banter.
Since it was Israelites talking here, of course, their speech was filled with “Praise Adonai” rhetoric.
Alright, let’s stop here.
Instead of a takeaway, I wanna ask you a question.
If you were in David’s shoes, what would you do?
It seems like God has placed Saul in your hands…
Would you take this opportunity to slay Israel’s king?
If so, what moral reasoning would you use to justify your behavior?
On the other hand, if you would NOT take this chance to kill the King, why?
What would be your reasoning behind that decision?
Let me know in the comments below.
