“David said to Achimelekh, ‘Perhaps you have here with you a spear or a sword? I brought neither my sword nor my other weapons because the king’s mission was urgent.’ The cohen said, ‘The sword of Golyat the P’lishti you killed in the Elah Valley, is over there behind the ritual vest, wrapped in a cloth. If you want it, take it; it’s the only one here.’ David said, ‘There’s nothing like it; give it to me.’”-1 Samuel 21:9-10
Here’s an interesting question to ponder.
Why in the world would David think there’d be a weapon at the sanctuary of Nob?
That’s like me going to a hardware store and asking the clerk for a gallon of milk or something.
What’s even more interesting is that Goliath’s sword was being kept INSIDE the sanctuary.
Ahimelech figured who better to turn that sword over to than the man who had killed Goliath.
This also makes it more likely that Nob was on a mountain called Mt. Scopus.
Let’s see what we learned about the location of Goliath’s sword from an earlier chapter.
“David took the head of the P’lishti
and brought it to Yerushalayim,
but he put the armor of
the P’lishti in his tent.”
-1 Samuel 17:54
So we’re told that David took Goliath’s head to Jerusalem.
But then it says “he put Goliath’s armor in his tent”.
Scholars have their doubts about the accuracy of that statement, and if it was really David’s tent or not.
They think it might’ve been a different tent.
Since the Scripture doesn’t exactly say whose tent it was, there’s an ongoing debate about this.
I think the more accurate translation would be to say that David carried Goliath’s head to Jerusalem, and then he put Goliath’s armor in THE tent, instead of saying “his” tent.
But then that leads to the question of which tent are we talking about exactly.
Well homies, if it ain’t David’s tent, it had to the tent at Nob, near Jerusalem’s gates.
Ya feel me?
That’s why David went to Nob to ask for a weapon in the first place…
It’s because he knew he carried Goliath’s sword there in the past.
This also makes it clear why David fled to Nob in the first place.
So after getting his hands on the sword, David continues with his deception by telling Ahimelech he has to get going because his mission for the king is urgent.
Alright, let’s stop here for the takeaway.
Here’s the lesson I feel the Lord impressing upon my heart and mind as I blogged today.
In His perfect timing, God will supply you with what you need when you need it…
ESPECIALLY in urgent situations.
David was on the run empty-handed.
Yet, God directed him to a place (the sanctuary at Nob) where he could get what he needed to survive while being chased down by Saul’s men.
In this case, it was food and a weapon to do battle with.
So if you ever find yourself in a desperate situation…
Seek God’s voice through prayer…
During this quiet time, he will point you in the direction you need to go…
So you can get what you need AT THE MOMENT…
Again, it won’t seem like a total and complete solution…
But it will be what you need for today…
Don’t worry about tomorrow…
The Lord will help you cross tomorrow’s bridge when you come to it.
Hope you found this inspiring and helpful.
See ya later.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“So do not worry, saying,
‘What shall we eat?’
or ‘What shall we drink?’
or ‘What shall we wear?’
For the Gentiles run after
all these things, and your
heavenly Father knows
that you need them.
But seek first his kingdom
and his righteousness,
and all these things will
be given to you as well.”
-Matthew 6:31-33
